About the Oshkosh Youth Choir:

The Oshkosh Youth Choir is an “audition only” choral organization designed to provide additional music education, vocal development, music theory and performance opportunities to area youth. The Etude Choir is open to students in 3rd through 5th grades, Lyric Choir is comprised of students in 4th through 8th grades, and the Aria choir is open to music reading students in grades 9 through 12.

HISTORY

Dr. Carl Chapman, then Director of Choral Activities at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh and Director of the Oshkosh Chamber Singers formed the Oshkosh Youth Choir in 1993. The OYC was an offshoot of the Chamber Singers and was designed as a springboard to get children involved in choral music and performance at an earlier age. Initially, there was one choir comprised of highly motivated singers entering 4th through 8th grades.

In May of 1995 a second group called the “Choristers” was formed in order to accommodate growth and development of less experienced singers to prepare for the more advanced repertoire of the OYC. In September of 1998 the two choirs were merged to unify their choral strength. The OYC became an independent organization in 2001. Director, Jennifer Jensen, joined the OYC for the 2003 – 2004 school year, and has remained with the organization since that time.

CURRENT GROUPS IN DETAIL

The Oshkosh Youth Choir is now separated into three choirs. The Etude Choir (3rd through 5th grade students) works on tuning student’s voices to a choral environment while teaching basic musicianship, music reading and notation. The Lyric Choir (6th through 8th grade students) dedicates time during each weekly rehearsal to work on music theory, reading skills and vocal development. The Aria Choir (9th through 12th grade students) further enhances these skills through performances of very challenging music.

Members receive voice training and bodywork to form the foundation for a lifetime of musical excellence. Emphasis is placed on the development of vocal and performance techniques, music theory and reading skills, along with social interaction and self-confidence through on-stage performances.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Oshkosh Youth Choir is an organization dedicated to fostering and developing the musical skills, body mechanics, self-confidence and community awareness in students, both male and female, in grades 3 through 12.

VISION

The vision of the Oshkosh Youth Choir is to cultivate children’s love of music through musical, artistic, cultural and social experiences. Not only is the OYC’s goal to foster the continuous growth and development of members in all areas of musical theory and performance, and aspiring towards making members aware of the role of music in our culture and community.
